Character Information
Name: Chise Hatori
Canon: The Ancient Magus Bride
Canon Point: Chapter 46
Age: 16
History:
During the early years of her childhood, Chise was a wide eyed girl who loves her parents and baby brother. She was able to see strange creatures at a young age, but in the company of her father and mother she was safe. Her mother shared the same ability as her but she was always reassuring Chise that she would be fine-- not to mention the fact that her father's presence seem to keep said creatures away. So long as she stayed by her family's side Chise knew she would be okay. Yet life was always throwing curve-balls her way, the first one in the form of her father disappearing without warning with her baby brother, leaving her with her mother. It was not long before the monsters and strange creatures came a haunting once more to plague both she and her mother. The consequences of such had stressed her mother to the point of first attempting to strangle her own daughter before ultimately committing suicide instead.

Chise was taken in by relatives soon after but still fate would continue to be cruel: because she was the only one that could see these spirits, she was in a constant state of fear and anxiety. This left her aunt to be, understandably, confused and stressed, already upset to start for having to take Chise in when she has her own two sons to raise. Between Chise and the strain on her marriage with her husband, her aunt eventually took her sons and left, leaving Chise in the neglectful care of her uncle. Even the sanctuary of the mysterious library that Chise found ended in ruin and the owner that she had befriended was killed by a monstrous creature that devoured half of him.

Suffering tragedy after tragedy, Chise had finally reached a point where by the time she was fifteen, she simply did not care about herself or what would happen to her. When a strange man approached her one day, offering her the opportunity to put her life to use in a fashion, she agreed without hesitating. She knew she was different though she did not understand why. Believing to have nothing else to live for, Chise agrees to sell herself at the strange auction, being told that her gift would be of great interest to whomever would pay the highest price for. And oddly enough, it was on that the day, the day she found herself on the stage of the auction house, did things finally begin to change for the better for her.

A very strange and equally bizarre mage by the name of Elias Ainsworth paid 5 million pounds for her, easily winning the bid for the girl. Though his body seemed human his head was an animal's skull-- and once the papers were signed and payment made, he took Chise away from Japan to his home in England. Taking her into his home, Elias explained to her what she was, a sleigh beggy, and told her that from then on she would be his apprentice (and then later on, his bride, much to her surprise and confusion). Under his care and teachings, not to mention with help from tools made by Angelica Barlei, Chise studied how to control her abilities as a sleigh beggy and how to use them for magic. Periodically she would travel with Elias whenever he was given a job that only he as a mage could handle.

It was through these jobs that she came into contact with many a unique being. While looking into a town plagued by a stagnation, the pair meet with a twisted child-like monster by the name of Cartaphilus. Though when called that by Elias, he snapped at the mage, demanding to be addressed as Joseph instead. Multiple times she would cross paths with him, one of those times being when she was protecting a grim from being captured by him. Said grim chose to become her familiar when all was said and done, to which he was given the name Ruth by Chise, now forever bound to the sleigh beggy until the day they died. She met who she eventually learned to be Elias' master, a powerful man named Lindenbaum, who was in charge of taking care of the dragons that still remained in the world. And on more than one occasion she would cross paths with an alchemist and his apprentice, Renfred and Alice respectively.

Over time Chise began to harness and temper her abilities, studying magic under Elias' guidance. Often times other fae folk would try and help too, especially since her being a sleigh beggy meant she drew their favor. But because of her ability to be a sponge to soak in magic and enhance it, multiple times she has pushed herself too far. Given how weak her heart and body is, she has brushed against death more than once, and has been known to sleep for days on end just so that she can recover. The most drastic occurrence came when she surpassed her limit in creating a magical salve that left her barely clinging to life from the amount of stress she had put on her body to make it. Whisked away to the land of the fae, the rulers favoring the girl and granting her entrance, she was able to recover, though in this instance it took months.

Personality:
"At first, I thought to myself I'd accept being thrown away at any moment, so I tried not to rely on him at all. I comforted nyself with the thought that he didn't care about me."

To those who do not know the sleigh beggy, Chise comes off as a quiet teenager, one that keeps to herself. And indeed, prior to Elias taking her in, she was just that-- a girl with little aspiration or self-motivation. Her life as a sleigh beggy was taxing emotional as well as mentally, and because if this, she would retreat into her own mind and close herself off from the world. After the constant rejection from family and others, she felt herself to be nothing more than a burden. It was a mind set that proved to be difficult to break free of when given the opportunity to start her life anew.

But in the first couple months that followed the red haired teen began to pull herself out of the empty shell that she believed herself to be before. Instead of drowning in the numb feelings of her past, she focused her attention on her magic and skills. In becoming both a student and teacher for Elias, she was given the chance to be helpful to someone. Whether it was learning how to read and write english, brew the right sleeping potion for a client, or purify tormented souls trapped in their own misery-- Chise would put one hundred percent of her all into it. Even if it meant pushing herself past the limit her body could handle.
"But.. I... Even if it's just for a moment, even if it's just one glance, or one word, I wish they could..."
"No. ...Well, that's what I'd like to say. But fine. Go ahead."
    "What."
"I've never seen you want something this much before, Chise. That's why."

Given how new the world of magic is for her too, she shows attention and patience as both she and Elias learn to understand each other. She is naive still in how this world works, how the fae interact with one another compared to humans, but she is always attentive to Elias' teachings. Though sometimes his warnings will go in one ear and out the other in times of dire circumstance.

Everything she chooses to do is for the sake of others. There is very little she aska for herself and would rather be there for others. And because she rarely had any friends growing up as a child, the sleigh beggy is protective of those she holds dear. She empathizes with them when they are in pain. If it is something she can solve with her magic she will set work in an heartbeat to do so. Or should anyone threaten their safety, she has been known to lose control of her magic in order to protect them from whomever dares to try and harm them. This, too, comes at risk to her health, but Chise always puts herself second to everyone she cherishes. It this reckless behaviour that has landed her into trouble on more than one occassion.
"Chise, you shouldn't be doing that. We can't be the ones screwing with the rules of the world."

Her heart is in the right place though because of her lack of experience in magic and world of fae, she will end up taking on more than she can handle. She has made many a mistake since she came under Elias' wing, but with each mishap she makes, she learns and she grows from them. Chise is young and will always act on her heart first, common sense second. But she always means well and everything she does, it is for the sake of another. Even at the potential cost of her life.

Abilities & Skills:
( sleigh beggy ): as a sleigh beggy her body is capable of absorbing and expending great quantities of magic. because of this, she is loved by all fae alike who will jump at the chance assist her in anyway.

( magic ): it is through her connections with the fae that chise has the ability to perform magic, such as potion brewing, flying and purifying.

( sight ): chise also possesses the sight that allows her to see amalgamations and creatures that normal humans would not normally be able to see.

( curses ): there are two curses that are affecting chise, one of immortality and one that of a dragon. the former is from when she had exchanged her left eye with joseph who was the original person cursed with immortality. the latter is from when she had tried to calm down a baby dragon running rampant in london. because of said curse she has been granted super strength, enhanced senses, as well as limited shape shifting in her arm, which is where the curse remains.

( mind ): when unconscious, she has the ability to connect to the mind of offers, typically unintentionally.

( singing ): she can imbue her magic through singing which she had learned originally from lindel.

( skinwalker ): with assistance from a pelt gifted to her from ashen eyes chise possesses the ability to shape-shift into an animal, though which animal that is depends on the situation she finds herself in.

Inventory/Companions: Other than the clothes she's wearing, she also has her bag that contains an extra change of clothes and the school materials she brought with her to her first day attending the college. She's also wearing Elias' bolo tie and the necklace that her wand hangs from in it's small form. No companions. She does have a familiar, Ruth, but Ruth is very much a character of his own and I feel that it would be like trying to play two characters instead of just one.

Choice: Witch
Reason: it was honestly a toss up between monster and witch because both felt equally justifiable for Chise. But in the end, I decided on witch for the sole reason that a witch in canon had initially invited her to their coven but declined. So the idea of her actually becoming a witch was entertaining and something fun to explore.

Lifting a hand, the red haired girl shielded her gaze from the sun as she looked up to the sky. It was a welcomed change from the rain the past few days and for a moment, she basked in the warmth of the sun. After breathing in deep to catch the scent of wet grass that lingered in the air, Chise adjusted the strap of her shoulder bag before setting off.

She fished out the list from the pocket of her jacket and glanced between the writing on the page and what was ahead of her. It was still early in the morning and she was tending to her chores for the day. Along the way she would stop and greet the shop owners as she passed, minding to make sure she bowed and returned each 'Good morning!' that was addressed to her.

Just as she was rounding the corner of the street the girl was caught off guard when she felt a smaller body collide with her own at rapid speed. With a yelp of surprise she stumbled backwards, landing most ungracefully on her behind, sending her shoulder bag sprawling to her side.

It took a moment for the confusion to settle but when it did, she realized that it was a child who had ran into her. The young girl, no more than seven she looked, was on the ground too, though she was clutching her knee with tears forming in the corners of her eyes. Chise's eyes went wide for a split second before realizing that the child had hurt herself in the collision.

From the around the corner she could hear a woman's voice calling out a name, and when she came into view and spotted them both, she made a beeline right for them. A frantic stream of "Are you alright? What happened? You shouldn't have ran off like that!" This was met with sniffles from the child, Chise observed, as she seemed to be trying her best not to cry because of the scrape on her knee.

"Just a minute--" Looking around for it, her eyes caught sight of her bag, to which she immediately reached for. She could feel the eyes of the child and her mother on her but thankfully, she was able to find what she was looking for quickly. Fingers closing around a small wooden box, she pulled it from her bag and moved to kneel in front of the little girl. "This will take a moment," Chise explained all while opening it up and started to pull out items from it: a small bottle containing a salve she had made herself, a cotton ball, and a cloth bandage. Holding the bottle up for the mother to see, she said, "It's only a scrape but it never hurts to be careful. This will help to heal the wound without scarring."

"Of course," the woman replied, nodding. Kneeling down beside her own child, she smiled to comfort her little one. After instructing her to sit still for the red head she nodded to Chise to continue.

In less than five minutes Chise had the scrape treated and bandaged. The lid of the bottle snapped shut to preserve the remaining salve, looking between parent and child kindly. "There we go, all better."
